Kin by Marriage

Some of my peers are terming this week Relationship Week (not sure if this is the official week nationally or not). They have used a social networking site to ignite topics about relationships. Naturally, many of the discussions have been about marriage in terms of relevance and reasons to enter or leave a marriage.

In the past year, I have had a number of people say that they don’t know of any good marriages, quote statistics, or depreciate marriage through condemnation. Also, I have known a lot of people to use the same reasons to postpone or denounce ever getting married. Those who know me well know my views of marriage and the positive effects it has on the long term health of everyone in the household, in our families, and in the community.

As most of you know, my birthday this year was also the one year anniversary of my divorce. That was a decision made based on our circumstances and is separate from any other situation. Recently, I have had a few friends comment on how it is still possible for me to still think marriage is such a good institution, given my circumstances. Because I do! Sharing a life with a partner is the bees knees and I pray the Lord will send me someone one day; but if He don’t, I’m good and I will still praise the benefits of marriage.

When someone tells you statistics, don’t look down to read the statistics…look up!!

p.s. This thought process was initiated by an article about an 85 year old marriage featured below:

Coming Together

It is time to come together as a people to help Haiti. Please help to spread the word about the Black Global Development Corps and Diaspora Development Fund. They were created to help those of Haitian descent and all from African descent learn the necessary skills to compete globally and help before, during and after disasters.
